There are four systems worth considering on the island, and each suits a different property. Instant (tankless) heaters heat water on demand, take up no space and never run out, but need stable water pressure and a strong dedicated circuit to perform. Solar thermal systems use rooftop collectors to pre-heat water almost for free, brilliant in sunny coastal areas but reliant on an electric backup for cloudy spells. Heat-pump heaters are the efficient newcomer, pulling heat from the warm tropical air, though the higher upfront cost only pays back on high-usage properties. For most Bali properties the real choice comes down to storage versus instant. Storage tanks win when you have several bathrooms used at once, hard water (the element is replaceable), or unstable pressure โ they buffer all three. Instant units win in compact apartments with one or two bathrooms, good mains pressure and a reliable supply, where their space saving and endless hot water shine. Bali gets enough sun to make solar thermal genuinely attractive, especially in open-roofed coastal areas. A well-sized system can cover the majority of a household's hot water for free once installed, with an electric element handling the wet-season shortfall and cloudy mornings. The catches are roof space, the upfront cost, and the need for occasional maintenance of the collector and the antifreeze loop. Across thousands of callouts, the same handful of faults recur. A burnt-out heating element is number one, accelerated by scale and voltage swings. A scaled tank that delivers less and less hot water is number two โ the scale insulates the element and shrinks usable volume. A faulty thermostat gives you water that's too hot, too cold or inconsistent. A tripping MCB usually points to an earth fault as water reaches a live part โ that one is a safety stop, not a reset-and-carry-on. It genuinely is harder here, and it helps to know why. Hard water from wells deposits scale on the element and inside the tank, the single biggest cause of early failure. PLN voltage fluctuation stresses the element and can trip aged breakers. Humidity and salt air corrode terminals and external fittings, especially near the coast. Together these three routinely cut a heater's life from its designed eight-to-ten years down to three-to-five. Sizing is where most installations go wrong. The number that matters is not bedrooms but simultaneous demand: how many showers and taps might run hot water at the same moment on a busy morning. A single-bathroom apartment is happy with a 30-litre tank or one instant unit. A three-bedroom villa needs roughly 80โ120 litres of storage, or several point-of-use heaters. A large rental villa running back-to-back guests needs a central tank with a recirculation loop, or commercial-grade capacity. We size every job around real occupancy and peak demand, then add a margin โ because a system that's slightly too big costs a little more to run, but one that's too small generates angry guests and callbacks.
In Bali's water the internal details decide how long a tank lasts. A sacrificial anode rod corrodes in place of the steel tank and should be checked every couple of years โ it's a cheap part that saves an expensive tank. A replaceable element (as opposed to a sealed unit) means a scaled or burnt element is a quick swap rather than a whole-unit replacement. Glass-lined or stainless tanks resist corrosion far better than bare steel. And an accessible drain valve turns the annual flush from a half-day job into a ten-minute one. A water heater combines mains electricity with water in a humid room, so the install is not a place to cut corners. Every heater needs its own correctly rated circuit and MCB, a proper earth connection and ideally an RCD/ELCB for shock protection. The temperature-and-pressure relief valve must be fitted and discharge safely. Connections should be sealed against humidity, and the unit mounted where it can actually be serviced rather than buried in an inaccessible void. Costs vary by type and by property, but as a rough 2026 guide: a basic electric storage heater installed runs a few million rupiah including the unit; instant heaters are similar; solar systems cost considerably more upfront but slash running costs; and a full villa system with multiple units or a recirculation loop is priced per the layout. A little maintenance multiplies a heater's life in Bali. Flush the tank once a year to clear sediment and scale, especially in hard-water areas like the Bukit. Check and replace the anode rod every two years. Fit a surge protector on the circuit if your area suffers voltage swings. Keep the thermostat at a sensible 55โ60ยฐC โ hot enough to kill bacteria and meet demand, not so high that it accelerates scaling. And have the element and connections inspected during the annual flush so a failing part is caught before it strands you on a Sunday morning. This routine is the difference between a five-year heater and a ten-year one.
The right system also depends on where you are, because water, power and building style change across the island. Finally, the installer matters as much as the unit. Look for someone who asks about your water source, your occupancy and your circuit before quoting โ a one-price-fits-all quote is a red flag. Ask whether the install includes a dedicated circuit, earth and relief valve, and whether they specify a replaceable element and anode in hard-water areas.
